Safety & Legal Information

⚠️ IMPORTANT DISCLAIMER

This project modifies safety-critical vehicle systems. Use entirely at your own risk.

  • Modifying CAN bus messages can affect vehicle safety systems
  • Tesla may remotely detect and disable modified vehicles
  • This may void your warranty
  • This may be illegal in your jurisdiction
  • You are solely responsible for any consequences

Known Risks

Remote Deactivation

As of March 2026, Tesla has begun remotely disabling FSD on vehicles detected using CAN bus mods:

  • 2 confirmed cases in China (March 2026)
  • Vehicle displays: "Driver assistance service package has been restored to default settings"
  • FSD package remains on account but mod no longer functions
  • Method appears to be manual (not automated detection)

Community Defense Measures

  • Remove SIM card from the vehicle to prevent Tesla from pushing remote changes
  • Use airplane mode on the vehicle when possible
  • Keep the CAN mod device easily removable for service visits

Regional Status

Region FSD Available Ban Reports Notes
USA None Safest region
Canada None Good for subscriptions
Europe ✅ (some) None Netherlands RDW reviewing FSD approval
China ❌ HW3 2 cases Tesla actively blocking. No FSD model for HW3
Taiwan ⚠️ Unknown No TLSSC option in UI
Japan ⚠️ Unknown No TLSSC option in UI
Korea ⚠️ Unknown Tesla issued official warning

Legal Considerations

  • Right to repair: In many jurisdictions, you have the right to modify your own vehicle
  • Type approval: CAN modifications may affect vehicle type approval in EU/regulated markets
  • Insurance: Undisclosed modifications may void insurance coverage in case of accidents
  • Liability: If an accident occurs while using modified FSD, you bear full responsibility

Safety Best Practices

  1. Test in a safe environment first — empty parking lot, low speed
  2. Always be ready to take over — FSD is not fully autonomous
  3. Keep the mod easily removable — for service visits and emergencies
  4. Stay updated — follow the community for ban reports and safety issues
  5. Don't use on public roads until you're confident in the system's behavior
